Anytime you get yourself something new, it’s natural to want to break it out as soon as you get home. So it’s not surprising that when most people buy a new humidor, they’re eager to fill it with all their cigars right away.
However, you have to establish the appropriate level of moisture as well as the appropriate temperature before storing your cigars, so there are a number of steps you absolutely must follow in order to make sure your humidor is ready.
In order to set up your humidor correctly, you must first humidify your device.
Here's how:
1. Fill a shallow dish with distilled water and place it inside the humidor.
2. Place your calibrated hygrometer inside the humidor.
Check the humidity of your device about once a day until it has reached 70%. (This could take anywhere from several days to several weeks, so be patient). Once the level of humidity in your humidor has officially reached the 70% range, wait a few extra days to be sure it has definitely reached the necessary levels. At that point, you can finally store your cigars inside safely.
